Silicon Valley has no shortage of event venues, but some of the most memorable aren’t traditional ballrooms or hotels.
As an off-site catering company, we’ve had the opportunity to work in venues throughout San Jose, Silicon Valley, the Peninsula, San Francisco and beyond. We’ve seen firsthand how much the right setting can shape an event—from the way guests arrive and move through a space to the menu, décor and overall atmosphere.
Whether you’re planning a corporate celebration, wedding, fundraiser, conference reception or milestone event, here are 10 unique Bay Area venues we think are worth knowing about.
1. Hakone Estate and Gardens — Saratoga
If you’re looking for a setting that feels worlds away from Silicon Valley without actually leaving it, Hakone is hard to beat.
This historic Japanese garden in Saratoga is simply beautiful. Lush landscaping, traditional architecture, water features and hillside views create a setting that needs very little embellishment.
One of the things we especially like about Hakone is the ability to create an indoor-outdoor experience. Guests can explore the gardens and gather outdoors before transitioning to the tea ceremony room or tented grounds for the next portion of their celebration.
And given the beauty of the property, Hakone can be a surprisingly approachable option from a budget standpoint.
Why we like it: Gorgeous scenery, indoor-outdoor possibilities and a setting that provides much of its own décor.
Great for: Weddings, receptions, corporate dinners and intimate celebrations.
2. Blanco Urban & Blanco Modern Venue — San Jose and Livermore
Blanco Urban in Downtown San Jose is one of our favorite examples of what can happen when a venue gives you a great blank canvas.
The clean, modern white space lets an event completely take on the personality of its host. Rather than designing around a traditional ballroom, you can bring in your own color, lighting, furniture, food stations and décor and really make the space your own. Its multiple levels and indoor-outdoor areas also make it possible to create different experiences as guests move through the event.
We also love the location. When the official event wraps up, guests are already in the heart of Downtown San Jose, with San Pedro Square just steps away for anyone who wants to keep the night going.
We’re also excited about the team’s forthcoming second location (opening Fall 2026), Blanco Modern Venue in Downtown Livermore. The new three-story venue brings the same blank-canvas philosophy to the Tri-Valley, with flexible indoor and outdoor event spaces and a rooftop deck overlooking the surrounding foothills. It’s an especially interesting addition for companies and couples looking for a contemporary venue in Livermore without giving up the character and walkability of a downtown setting.
Together, the two Blanco venues offer something we don’t see enough of in the Bay Area: modern spaces that are visually polished but still leave plenty of room for the food, design and personality of the event to take center stage.
Why we like them: Modern blank-canvas design, flexible indoor-outdoor spaces and great downtown locations.
Great for: Corporate parties, weddings, product launches, brand activations and events where food and design are a major part of the experience.
3. The Tech Interactive – Downtown San Jose
For a quintessentially Silicon Valley event, it’s difficult to think of a more appropriate setting than The Tech Interactive.
The Tech is also a venue that’s particularly meaningful to us at Smashing Dishes because it’s where we’ve produced some of the largest events in our history. We’ve catered multiple events here for more than 1,000 guests, including an event for 3,000 guests for a Fortune 50 company.
Events of that size require much more than simply producing a lot of food. Off-site catering for thousands of guests means carefully planning everything from culinary production, transportation and equipment to staffing, service timing, food stations and guest flow. The Tech’s scale and flexibility make it especially well suited for these kinds of ambitious events.
The venue itself also does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to atmosphere. Interactive exhibits give guests something to discover and experience throughout the event, so you don’t necessarily need to invest heavily in décor or entertainment to make the evening memorable.
And for companies bringing employees or guests to San Jose from around the country—or around the world—there’s something particularly fitting about hosting them in a venue that feels so unmistakably Silicon Valley.

Great for: Large corporate events, conferences, receptions, galas and company celebrations—from a few hundred guests to several thousand.
4. The Box SF — San Francisco
The Box SF has something that can’t easily be manufactured by an event designer: character.
Located conveniently near Moscone Center, this historic San Francisco space is filled with art, antiques, unusual architectural details and surprises. It feels creative and distinctly San Francisco rather than like another interchangeable event venue.
And then there’s the speakeasy.
Plenty of venues can create a speakeasy experience with décor, lighting and a hidden entrance. The Box has the real thing: a hidden speakeasy in the basement, concealed behind a wall that actually opens to reveal the space. It’s one of those details that’s almost impossible to describe without spoiling the surprise—and an incredible way to give guests a completely unexpected second experience during an event.
Imagine hosting cocktails or dinner upstairs and then, later in the evening, opening a hidden wall and bringing guests downstairs for drinks, dessert or a late-night party. It’s the kind of reveal people will still be talking about the next day.
The Box’s proximity to Moscone Center also makes it particularly interesting for companies hosting dinners, receptions and other gatherings around major conferences and conventions. Instead of bringing attendees from a convention center to another predictable event space, you can give them something that feels completely different.
Why we like it: Historic character, artistic atmosphere, an incredible hidden basement speakeasy and a convenient location near Moscone Center.
Great for: Conference receptions, corporate dinners, private parties, creative industry events and any event that could use an unforgettable late-night surprise.
5. San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art — San Jose
Art galleries make wonderful event spaces because they offer visual interest while still providing enough neutrality for an event to take on its own personality.
The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art delivers exactly that.
The gallery environment feels modern and sophisticated without feeling overly formal, and changing exhibitions mean the artwork itself becomes part of the guest experience.
Just as important from a caterer’s perspective: a beautiful venue is much more enjoyable when the people behind it are good partners. We’ve found the ICA team great to work with, which can make a meaningful difference during the planning and production of an event.
Why we like it: Contemporary gallery atmosphere, built-in visual interest and a collaborative venue team.
Great for: Cocktail receptions, nonprofit events, corporate gatherings, dinners and celebrations.
6. Winchester Mystery House — San Jose
There really isn’t another event venue quite like Winchester Mystery House.
One of San Jose’s most recognizable landmarks, the historic estate combines Victorian elegance with the strange, mysterious and slightly Gothic atmosphere for which the property is famous. The architecture, gardens and history give guests something to talk about from the moment they arrive.
What we especially love about Winchester is the range of events you can create here. The expansive grounds can accommodate events for several hundred guests, making the property an incredible setting for large corporate celebrations, receptions and themed events. But Winchester can also feel remarkably intimate.
For smaller gatherings, the estate’s outbuildings offer distinctive settings for private dinners and receptions. And for something truly special, the impeccably designed Twin Dining Rooms inside the mansion create an elegant, intimate dining experience surrounded by the history and architecture of the Winchester estate.
That flexibility means an event can evolve throughout the evening—perhaps beginning with cocktails outdoors, transitioning to dinner in one of the property’s unique spaces and finishing with an entirely different experience elsewhere on the grounds.
And when the official event is over, the night doesn’t necessarily have to be. Santana Row is directly across the street, giving guests an easy option to continue the evening with late-night drinks, restaurants and nightlife. For corporate groups in particular, that’s a great advantage: you can produce a highly curated private event at one of San Jose’s most iconic properties and then let anyone who wants to keep the party going simply head across the street.
From a design perspective, you can lean into Winchester’s Victorian elegance, embrace its darker Gothic personality, or create something contemporary that plays against the historic surroundings. Either way, this isn’t a venue you have to work hard to make memorable.
Why we like it: Iconic San Jose history, beautiful grounds, Victorian and Gothic character, the ability to host everything from intimate dinners to events for several hundred guests, and Santana Row nightlife just across the street.
Great for: Large corporate celebrations, intimate dinners, receptions, weddings, themed events and, of course, unforgettable Halloween-season events.
7. Mexican Heritage Plaza — San Jose
Mexican Heritage Plaza is one of those venues that can check a surprising number of boxes at once.
The property offers attractive architecture and grounds, ample opportunities for indoor-outdoor events and a strong sense of place. It can also represent excellent value compared with some other large Bay Area venues.
But venue selection isn’t only about square footage and rental rates. The place you choose can communicate something about your event and your organization.
For events that want to celebrate San Jose’s community, culture and diversity, Mexican Heritage Plaza can send exactly the right message before you’ve served a single bite of food.
Why we like it: Attractive grounds, strong cultural identity, versatility and good value.
Great for: Community celebrations, corporate events, fundraisers, weddings and large social gatherings.
8. Elizabeth F Gamble Garden — Palo Alto
Gamble Garden is a hidden gem in the middle of Palo Alto.
The historic property and beautifully maintained gardens create a park-like environment while remaining conveniently located in the heart of the Peninsula.
For an event, that combination is special. Guests get the feeling of escaping into a garden without requiring a long drive into the mountains or countryside.
The landscape also provides a natural backdrop for receptions and celebrations, making it particularly appealing when you want the setting—not elaborate décor—to do much of the visual work.
Why we like it: Beautiful gardens, historic character, central Peninsula location and a peaceful park-like atmosphere.
Great for: Weddings, garden parties, receptions, nonprofit events and intimate corporate gatherings.
9. Club Auto Sport — San Jose
Some venues are deliberately neutral. Club Auto Sport isn’t—and that’s the point.
For automotive enthusiasts or an event that benefits from an industrial, motorsports-inspired atmosphere, the venue provides an identity from the moment guests walk in. That makes it particularly fun for themed corporate events, where the environment gives you a head start instead of requiring you to manufacture a concept inside a generic ballroom.
For corporate groups, one of the coolest features is Club Auto Sport’s Pit Crew Challenge, an interactive team-building experience that lets guests work together like an actual racing pit crew. It’s a natural fit for corporate events because the activity reinforces communication, teamwork and a little friendly competition—all while tying directly into the personality of the venue.
Then there are the racing simulators, which guests absolutely love. They add another interactive element to the event and inevitably bring out some friendly competition. Instead of relying solely on traditional entertainment, guests can actually get behind the wheel, race their coworkers and compare their performance throughout the evening. For a corporate party, they’re a great way to get people participating rather than simply watching.
Together, the Pit Crew Challenge and racing simulators make it possible to build an entire event around the motorsports experience. Guests can compete in team-building activities, transition into cocktails and dinner, and continue racing and socializing throughout the night.
From a catering perspective, we’re also fans of opportunities to make the food part of the entertainment. Club Auto Sport’s pizza oven, for example, creates the potential for a fun late-night pizza station as the party continues.
Why we like it: A distinctive automotive personality, the Pit Crew Challenge, crowd-pleasing racing simulators and opportunities to carry the theme through the food and entire guest experience.
Great for: Corporate team-building events, company parties, automotive events, themed celebrations, product launches and casual receptions.
10. Long Branch Saloon & Farms — Half Moon Bay
Sometimes you don’t want elegant, polished or contemporary. You want guests to loosen their ties, grab a drink and have some fun.
Long Branch delivers.
The Half Moon Bay property has an unapologetically Western, slightly kitschy personality that makes it perfect for events willing to embrace a theme. It’s spacious enough to accommodate larger casual gatherings, and the coastal location turns getting out of Silicon Valley into part of the experience.
This is the kind of place where barbecue feels completely at home. Add live music, games and the right drinks and you have the ingredients for a company picnic or celebration that feels very different from another night in a hotel ballroom.
Why we like it: Fun Western character, plenty of room, a coastal destination feel and a natural fit for casual menus.
Great for: Company picnics, barbecues, retreats, Western-themed events and casual celebrations.
Choosing the Right Bay Area Venue for Your Event
A great venue shouldn’t just accommodate your guest count. It should help accomplish what you’re trying to create.
Before signing a venue contract, think about how guests will experience the entire event. Where will they park or arrive? Where does cocktail hour happen? How does the group transition to dinner? Is there sufficient space and infrastructure for catering? Where will the bar go? What happens if the weather changes? And how much décor will you need before the room feels special?
Those questions are particularly important with unique off-site venues, because they weren’t necessarily designed like hotels or traditional event facilities. That’s also what makes them interesting.
